 |
A number of diseases cause dementia.
The most common are Alzheimer´s dementia and Vascular
Dementia (caused by disruption of blood flow). |
| |
 |
Approximately
200 000 people in Sweden have a dementia disease. About
one million persons are affected (families/relatives).
|
| |
 |
The dementia diseases cause severe
handicaps with considerable needs for care. |
| |
 |
Persons with
a dementia handicap are strongly affected by the environment
and the attitudes of those who surround them.
|
| |
 |
With the right support in their
own homes and with the help of contact persons and day
care persons with a dementia handicap can remain at home
during a considerable part of the disease period. |
| |
 |
Many persons
with dementia are in hospitals, nursing homes and other
institutions, often in an unsuitable environment. Often
care and nursing methods are used which have a negative
influence on the quality of life. |
| |
 |
Persons with a dementia handicap
can not plead their own cause. |
 |
 |
Better knowledge of dementia within care,
nursing and social service and more information to the
public. |
| |
 |
Examination
resources to make it possible for all persons with an
assumed dementia to get a correct diagnosis and receive
correct treatment.
|
| |
 |
More medical, psychological and
social research on dementia |
| |
 |
Qualified
and sufficient personnel in dementia care and nursing.
|
| |
 |
Better use and redistribution
of available resources by the following measures:
|
| |
- |
visiting work |
| |
- |
development and increase of home
support, day-care and contact persons for demented people
who live at home |
| |
- |
increase and development of group
living centres and similar small units for those who can
not remain at home. |
